New Coating for Braces Prevents Tooth Decay

In the first study of its kind, researchers at the NYU College of Dentistry have formulated a new product to help prevent tooth decay for those that wear braces.  Preventing tooth decay around orthodontic brackets and wires has always been a concern.  Until now, researchers have been challenged to develop products that prevent plaque and calculus. Plaque and calculus form from bacteria that tend to accumulate around braces and can lead to tooth decay.

While current methods, such as tooth varnishes or laser therapy, may reduce plaque to a degree, they can be expensive or weaken the bond or strength of fixed braces.

The new product, a calcium phosphate coating, is effective and inexpensive.  Once the product is patented, it will be available as an over-the-counter product and will not require an orthodontist’s prescription.
